Trump wants attorney general to end Russia probe

Paul Manafort made more than $60 million consulting for a Russia-backed political party in Ukraine, according to prosecutors investigating Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election.

Manafort has spent the past month in prison in Alexandria outside Washington after having his house arrest and $10 million bail revoked by a federal judge for allegedly tampering with witnesses in another pending case.

Prosecutors are expected to say that his life of luxury did not match what he had declared on his tax returns.

Manafort has pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

A "high percentage" of that was funnelled into offshore accounts and shell companies to evade taxes, Mr Mueller said in court documents.

Mr Manafort has filed a motion to have details oft hat work excluded from trial.

Testimony is likely to begin Tuesday afternoon.

Paul Manafort, 69, who chaired the Trump campaign during the summer of 2016, was accused of putting "himself and his money above the law" by laundering tens of millions of dollars derived from pro-Moscow groups in Ukraine.

"Paul J. Manafort, Jr., by and through counsel, hereby moves for an extension of time, from August 1, 2018 to August 27, 2018, to submit a Joint Pretrial Statement".

Manafort faces 18 counts. He created "bogus" loans, falsified documents and lied to his tax preparer and bookkeeper to hide the money, which he obtained from Ukrainian oligarchs through a series of shell company transfers and later from fraudulently obtained bank loans in the USA, prosecutors said.

Yet the trial also contains pitfalls for Trump.

The trial is expected to last about three weeks.

Asonye said Manafort set up more than 30 bank accounts in overseas countries and funnelled millions of dollars into them in order to bankroll an extravagant lifestyle. Five witnesses were granted immunity.

Mr. Asonye attempted to backtrack, telling Judge Ellis that the evidence presented will determine if Mr. Gates' testifies. "He worked for me for a very short time".

Mueller's original mandate was to investigate not only potential collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation, but also any other crimes arising from the probe.

Russian Federation has denied interfering in the election and Trump denies any involvement by his campaign.

Manafort's defense strategy is still unknown.

"It is hereby stipulated and agreed by and between the parties that the (case) be voluntarily dismissed", the new filing said.

"It isn't a crime to have a lot of money and be profligate in your spending", U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis III said. "He could expose himself to further criminal culpability if he has to expose the full extent of those ties".

After several hours of discussions with individual jurors, prosecutors from the special counsel's office and lawyers for Mr. Manafort rejected about 20 potential jurors.

Mueller's team has indicted or secured guilty pleas from 32 people and three companies, including the indictment of 12 Russian intelligence officials.
