Godin's agent approached United this week while Atletico were playing in Cagliari, saying the player was keen to come to Old Trafford.
Now that the Godin deal has fallen through, it looks like United won't be signing any new central defenders before this evening's 5pm deadline - a position Jose Mourinho has seen as a priority to strengthen.
It seems Man Utd have also made an audacious attempt to sign Godin as ESPN are one of several outlets reporting they have made it clear to Atletico Madrid they are willing to meet the defender's £18m release clause. He was in fantastic form in the World Cup in the summer, with some describing him as the best defender at the tournament.

International Olympic Committee signs up United States crude in 1st ever term-tender deal
Energy Information Administration reported a surprise build of 3.8 million barrels in commercial crude oil inventories. Brent for October settlement traded at $74.53 a barrel on the London-based ICE Futures Europe exchange, down 12 cents.
Leicester City are said to want a world record fee for Harry Maguire, Tottenham want around £50m for Toby Alderweireld, who has one year left on his deal, and Bayern Munich's Jerome Boateng has reportedly said he has no interest in moving to Manchester.
Atletico have resisted offers for Godin in previous summers and it would have to be a substantial bid to convince them to sell at this late stage.
But Mourinho told reporters at the beginning of deadline day that he didn't anticipate any new arrivals at Old Trafford.
"I'm not confident, I'm not confident and the market closes today so it is time at least for me to stop thinking about the market because the market will be closed".
