This could be the end of Cristiano Ronaldo, who at 33, must know he cannot get his hands on the biggest football prize anymore and he still failed to score in the second round of the FIFA World Cup.

Uruguay are yet to concede a single goal at the 2018 World Cup, facing just six shots on target in three games - the last South American team not to concede in their first four matches of a World Cup tournament was Brazil in 1986. Messi on the other hand only managed one.

Portugal started group play with thrilling comeback to tie 3-3 against Spain, with Ronaldo notching a hat trick and punching in the tying goal in the 88th minute.

Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez: "We need to improve very quickly [from the performance against Russia], because any match in the round of 16 will be extremely hard".

It was Edinson Cavani who instead took the spotlight. "There aren't words to describe this".

However, Cavani struck a well-placed shot in the 62nd minute to ensure that Portugal moves on to the quarter finals. He was helped to the sideline with his arm around Ronaldo's back.

The stage was set for Cristiano Ronaldo.

If Barcelona forward Messi, who previously quit the Argentina team in 2016 before changing his mind, does not continue until the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, he will end his career without a major trophy for his country.

Cristiano Ronaldo has never scored in the knockout stages of the World Cup. Next up for the underdogs is France and if they can snatch the first goal, their defence could see them through to the final four.

Brazilian media Trolls on Germany's defeat
Germany marked an 80-year low in World Cup competition as they were sent packing from Russian Federation 2018 in the first round. Shock loss: Germany's Julian Brandt, left, goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, and Joshua Kimmich.

Ronaldo was involved somewhat in Portugal's goal, even if he didn't come close to getting a touch on the cross. Ronaldo ran in front of Pepe and drew the attention of both Gimenez and Godin.

But parity did not last long, Cavani steering a brilliant curling finish into the corner after 62 minutes following Bentancur's beautifully-weighted pass into his path.

EARLY GOAL It was a five-pass build-up from deep in its own end that culminated in Uruguay's first goal, and the final two passes were ideal.

Cavani switched play from right to left with a sweeping pass out to Suarez, who teased his man before delivering a wonderful cross his strike partner crashed home at the back post. We wanted to win, we fought well, but Uruguay should be congratulated.

There are many possible factors for Europe's grip on the World Cup, but South America's contribution to the world game is at least on a par with Europe, with so many of its players starring for European clubs. KEYS TO THE GAME Stopping Ronaldo.

Uruguay will be sweating on Cavani's fitness for the next round after he left the match midway through the second half with an injury, though.

20 minute: Free-kick to Uruguay Suarez goes down after a challenge from Raphael Guerreiro.

Then, after Pepe had drawn Portugal level from a corner kick, Cavani turned on the magic once more.
