As protesters across the country today demand that children be reunited with their families on the southwest U.S. border, President Donald Trump defended the work of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

"The Democrats are making a strong push to abolish ICE, one of the smartest, toughest and most spirited law enforcement groups of men and women that I have ever seen", Trump posted at 7:07 am.

In a following tweet, he says abolition will "never happen!"

This came on the same day as a protest in downtown Dallas of family separations at the U.S. -Mexico border.

In recent days a number of high-profile Democrats, including the New York City mayor, Bill de Blasio, and New York senator Kirsten Gillibrand, have called for the agency to be disbanded with a new immigration enforcement program brought in in its place.

Upping the ante, Trump tweeted that all law enforcement is in the Democrats' cross-hairs.

On Monday, Rep. Mark Pocan, D-Wis., said he would introduce legislation to eliminate the agency. On Tuesday, upstart progressive candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old middle class Latina from the Bronx, shocked the political world by unseating longtime Democratic Rep. Joe Crowley in a NY primary.

He said he learned those agencies are feeling pressure from elected officials who must answer to their communities, including many people who don't agree with stepped-up enforcement by ICE.

Fox News is scrambling in response to the grass-roots movement to abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which has begun seeping into mainstream progressive and Democratic politics.

White House spokesman Hogan Gidley didn't respond to a request for comment.

"I am confident and hopeful that it will not last long and that it will not last forever, because of every single individual who's on this block today", the 28-year-old told attendees.

ROSE: Tameem Fructer (ph) wanted to send a message to the agents on the front line of the Trump administration's immigration crackdown. "We know that when people have a effect for illegal activity they do less of it and that's what we're trying to accomplish here". Of those detained, 17 had criminal convictions and 14 had were previously released from Philadelphia County custody, despite having an ICE detainer lodged against them.

But, while it was unlikely to gain much traction on the right, Trump on Saturday backed ICE agents and said there was "zero chance" of ICE being abolished.
