Musk, founder of the Boring Company, as well as the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX tweeted Thursday: "SpaceX & Boring Co engineers headed to Thailand tomorrow to see if we can be helpful to govt". A former member of Thailand's Navy SEAL team died trying to place oxygen tanks along a potential escape path, BuzzFeed News reports.

Rescuers are in a race against time to get the team out of the cave, as oxygen levels are falling and monsoon rains threaten to leave them trapped for months. Musk said based on "feedback from Thailand", the engineers chose to build a "tiny, kid-size submarine" using a large silver tube meant to be affixed to a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.

He also raised the possibility of a nylon tube being inserted into the cave to inflate it with air "like a bouncy castle".

Musk added on Friday that his engineers will have to assess the "many complexities" of the situation further in person. The billionaire entrepreneur said this would create an underwater air tunnel with the ability to "auto-conform to odd shapes".

It all started with a plea from a random Twitter user.

Musk said earlier this week that technicians could pump water through the cave and provide Tesla-made battery packs to provide electricity to boost the pump rate.

Rescue workers work near the Tham Luang cave complex in the northern province of Chiang Rai, Thailand, July 7, 2018. "Prob need to enter tube, zip up & then transit".

Teams of Thai and worldwide divers have since supplied them with food, oxygen and medical attention, but there are mounting concerns about the oxygen level in the chamber, which officials said had fallen to 15%. They became trapped inside the Tham Luang Nang Non cave, which is believed to be about 4-5 miles long.

And on Twitter, he's also been offering outside-the-box ideas to help rescuers.

Will this solution work? And if enough water can be pumped out, it is hoped that the boys would be able to wade - or be floated out. "If so, could dropship fully charged Powerpacks and pumps".
