Saudi-led forces battle Shiite rebels south of key Yemen port

Battle for Yemen's biggest port under way

Saudi-Led Alliance Gears up for Assault on Key Yemeni Port City

The two sides were also at odds over the recent deployment of UAE forces to the Yemen's Arabian Sea island of Socotra, a dispute mediated by Saudi officials.

Yemen has been devastated by civil war, with the Houthi movement trying to take control of the country and forcing President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi to flee overseas.

"Such hostile acts by the Iran-backed Houthi militias prove the continuing involvement of the Iranian regime in supporting the Houthi militias with qualitative capabilities in a flagrant and explicit violation of the two United Nations resolutions No. 2216 and 2231 with the objective of threatening the security of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as well as the regional and worldwide stability".

Meanwhile, diplomats in the region told The New York Times that "only pressure from Washington, which sells tens of millions of dollars of weapons to the United Arab Emirates and to Saudi Arabia every year, could stop the assault".

"We are in constant contact with all the parties involved to negotiate arrangements for Hodeida that would address political, humanitarian, security concerns of all concerned parties", said Martin Griffiths in a statement.

Social media users shared video of what appeared to be a convoy of vehicles approaching the crucial port city early Wednesday morning.

Saudi-owned satellite news channels later announced the battle had begun, citing military sources.

The U.S. has been supplying targeting information to the Saudi-led coalition, as well as refuelling their warplanes, but was not involved in military operations at the port, Pentagon spokesman Maj.

The Saudi-led coalition has been conducting airstrikes on the city.

Yemen's Iran-backed Huthi rebels suffered 30 fatalities in the fighting, which took place two kilometres (1.2 miles) from Hodeida airport, south of the city, medical sources told AFP. He said a senior official from the U.N. Secretariat would brief council members in closed consultations.

The U.N. says some 600,000 people live in and around Hodeida, and "as many as 250,000 people may lose everything - even their lives" in the assault.

The United Nations says it remains in Yemen's Red Sea port of Hodeida, the target of a new offensive by a Saudi-led coalition, and is working with aid groups to help those affected by the conflict.

The war pits the Houthis against the Western-backed Sunni Muslim states, which intervened in 2015 to restore the exiled government and thwart what Riyadh and Abu Dhabi see as expansionist aims Iran. The sound of heavy, sustained gunfire clearly could be heard in the background.

Emirati-led troops have advanced along the southwestern coast to the outskirts of Hodeidah under a coalition strategy to box in the Houthis in the capital Sanaa and choke off their supply lines to force them to the negotiating table.

The United Nations and other aid groups already had pulled their global staff from Hodeida ahead of the assault.

"We do not provide any additional support to the Saudi coalition's military operations", he said.
