Trump administration officials on Sunday accused Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of stabbing President Trump in the back, blaming him for the president's refusal to endorse a joint statement with other world leaders.

President Trump on Saturday said the United States will not endorse a G7 communique via a tweet accusing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of making "false statements".

Asked if she was concerned that Trump could retaliate against European Union counter-measures by imposing tariffs on cars, Merkel said: "First of all, we'll try and see if we can prevent this".

"It's actually not a real surprise, we have seen this with the climate agreement or the Iran deal", Maas said when asked to comment on Trump's decision to back out of the G7 declaration drawn up at a summit in Canada.

"The Prime Minister said nothing he hasn't said before - both in public, and in private conversations with the President". But the summit host, Trudeau, whose nation was among those singled out by Trump, pushed back and said he would not hesitate to retaliate against his neighbor to the south.

The French president's office said in a statement: "International co-operation can not be dictated by fits of anger and throwaway remarks".

Trudeau's remarks prompted Trump to pull out of a joint communique that was a fragile consensus on the trade dispute between Washington and its top allies, Kudlow said.

President Donald Trump wrapped his short trip to Canada extolling his relationship with the G7 countries as a 10 out of 10, and blasting reports of rifts between the USA and world as nothing more than "fake news".

Leaving his allies in perplexed disarray, Trump was on Saturday night jetting around the world to meet a longtime adversary, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, for talks on denulcearizing the isolated nation. "I've been called worse things by better people", said the elder Trudeau.

Trump attended the 44th G7 summit which kicked off in Charlevoir, Canada on Friday.

While many said that the picture sums up Trump's time at G-7, several others called it a "power dynamic".

Mr Trump, who was leaving the summit in La Malbaie early, told reporters the USA needed protectionist tariffs because "we are like the piggy bank that everyone is robbing".

A tardy Donald Trump created a distraction this morning when he showed up late for a G7 meeting on women's empowerment. In fact, Russian Federation was expelled from what was then the G-8 after its invasion and annexation of Crimea and its support for pro-Russia separatists in Ukraine. While Russia is an important interlocutor when it comes to security questions in Europe and the Middle East, there's no justification for it to join the forum, the chancellor said, adding she "wasn't convinced" by Trump's arguments.
