Disney disagrees, noting that Marvel movies come out at even shorter intervals - "Thor: Ragnarok" in November, "Black Panther" in February, "Infinity War" in April. For the three-day premiere, estimates hover at about $83 million. As one person points out below, this dedicated fitness program sounds very familiar to Carrie Fisher's preparation for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. That is also at a budget far less than Solo, which after reshoots is speculated to be at $250 million (although some have claimed without sourcing it is upwards of $300 million).

Typically, one would not complain about an opening weekend north of $100 million, but the $101 million fetched by the latest installment in the Star Wars universe over the entire Memorial Day weekend is, indeed, hugely disappointing.

The news is far worse internationally, with the film falling well short of estimates to bring in just $65 million after "Solo" was predicted to earn $148 million in worldwide markets.

Also, over the last decade moviegoers have been less interested to go to the theater over Memorial Day weekend, which for most areas of the country is the first time to enjoy the nice weather outside. Through a series of daring escapades deep within a dark and risky criminal underworld, Han Solo meets his mighty future copilot Chewbacca and encounters the notorious gambler Lando Calrissian, in a journey that will set the course of one of the Star Wars saga's most unlikely heroes.

Grace Jiang, a 30-year-old office worker in Shanghai, said she took a chance on "Solo" based on the franchise's reputation, but nearly dozed off halfway through the film. These are the Star Wars games we wished we could have played.

It will be the second straight game Iguodala has missed after he bruised his left knee in the fourth quarter of Sunday's game. Durant in isolation is a matchup you're willing to exploit, but Golden State has relied on it much more than normal.

Analysts had predicted the Disney/Lucasfilm project - directed by Ron Howard and with Alden Ehrenreich as a young version of the swashbuckling Han Solo - would reach US$130 million to US$150 million, possibly setting a Memorial Day weekend record.

According to ComScore, overall box office is up 7.7 percent year-to-date. That was just under its $80 million to $85 million projections, and the lowest opening for a "Pirates" movie since the first one, 2003's "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" ($46.6 million).

In this field, the "Solo" opening doesn't look so bad.

It seems that will not be Solo's story. "I think part of the allure of the "Star Wars" brand in the past has been the long wait". You could make the argument that Marvel released "Avengers: Infinity Wars" two months after "Black Panther" and there certainly wasn't any MCU fatigue.

If "Solo" was a better movie, this would all be moot.
