Images and videos of the tree planting ceremony outside the White House went viral, spawning memes and media organizations remarking on the blooming "bromance" between Trump and Macron, as well as the close rapport between their first ladies Melania Trump and Brigitte Macron.
Photographs taken by Yuri Gripas of Reuters on Saturday showed only a yellow patch of grass in the spot on the White House grounds where the tree was planted.
An official in Macron's office said on Monday that Trump insisted on holding a symbolic planting ceremony alongside Macron despite the quarantine requirement.
But the French ambassador to the USA finally put the mystery to rest.

Fair-housing activists, on the other hand, argue that the area could offer affordable housing to tens of thousands of people. That blaze was brought under control relatively quickly, São Paulo Fire Brigade Lieutenant André Elias told Globo TV.
But the real story, according to a French official, is that the tree is being quarantined per USA customs rules to prevent the spread of foreign disease and parasites. White House officials say the tree's roots were wrapped at the time. It initially grew at the site of World War I's Battle of Belleau Wood, in which almost 2,000 American soldiers were killed.
The oak sprouted at a World War I battle site that became part of U.S. Marine Corps legend.
About 2000 United States troops died in the June 1918 Battle of Belleau Wood, fighting a German offensive.
Reuters reported that the tree would be inspected for parasites, which could spread to other trees nearby if left unchecked.
