Talks attempt to save summit for Trump-Kim

Trump: Plan for June summit with North Korea 'hasn't changed'

Former CIA chief unsure Trump 'has done the homework needed' on North Korea

The two delegations are focused on the substance of any summit between the Trump and Kim Jong Un: the issue of North Korea's nuclear weapons program. Trump, who has since teased that the summit might still happen, tweeted about the diplomatic efforts in North Korea late Sunday afternoon, expressing his optimism that the USA team's arrangements will pan out.

It is unclear when or where Trump and Abe will meet before the anticipated Singapore summit, which the US president has said in recent days is likely to occur on June 12 after he declared last Thursday that the summit would not be held on that day.

"It looked like the real Kim Jong Un, but later I realized it's not the real one", tourist Sagar Admuthe told Reuters. Trump tweeted that USA officials are in North Korea to prepare for the talks.

Now that planned meeting, scheduled for June 12 in Singapore, is off, capping a months-long back-and-forth with nuclear-armed Pyongyang and denying Trump the foreign policy victory he craved.

United States officials told the Wall Street Journal that the U.S. was prepared to announce increased sanctions against North Korea but chose to delay the action indefinitely while talks with North Korea continue.

The U.S. and Japanese leaders agreed that they will meet ahead of a much anticipated summit with North Korea's Kim Jong Un back on schedule for June 12 in Singapore, just days after Trump announced he was canceling it.

"They [North Koreans] would not do that", he told Al Jazeera, adding the Trump administration does not have a grand diplomatic strategy ahead of the talks.

If we got that done, and if we can be successful in the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, it would be a great thing for North Korea, it would be a great thing for South Korea.

And on Sunday, the US State Department said American and North Korean officials had met at Panmunjom.

"It was like an ordinary encounter between friends", Moon told reporters."What's uncertain for Kim is not his intention to denuclearize, but the US stance in hostile relations with North Korea and whether the USA can really secure and guarantee his regime".

Mr Randall Schriver, Assistant Secretary of Defence for Asian and Pacific Security Affairs, is also part of the team.

Sen. Marco Rubio, Florida Republican, said he's skeptical that Mr. Kim will agree to completely give up his country's nuclear capabilities, saying the leader has an nearly emotional attachment to them and that they make him feel prestigious and powerful. Within 24 hours, the United States president reversed his decision and said that the summit could still go ahead after productive talks were held with North Korean officials.

The fast and complete denuclearization of North Korea isn't a realistic goal, experts said.

"Last week's flip-flop helped North Korea earn sympathy from the global community while USA prestige was damaged".

"I think people want to see if we can get the meeting and get something done", Mr. Trump said.

"It has a chance to be a great, great meeting for North Korea and a great meeting for the world", he said.

Meanwhile US officials are reported to have travelled to the North on Sunday.

"Disadvantages that would have stopped other presidents - that North Korea would be left with nominally much stronger forces than the South, that China would be the long-term beneficiary of a United States withdrawal from Northeast Asia, that other allies around the world including in Europe would feel undermined - will not necessarily halt Trump".

"Let's be realistic. These summits take months not weeks to prepare", he said. He ended up getting killed at the hands of USA -backed rebels less than a decade later.

North Korean state media says that at the meeting Kim "expressed his fixed will" that the summit with Mr. Trump take place.

At the White House late on Saturday he said: "It's moving along very nicely".
