Edmund overpowers Goffin to reach last eight in Madrid

Kyle Edmund unconcerned if Novak Djokovic has turned a corner

Edmund came through in Madrid

Kyle Edmund landed another blow on Novak Djokovic by beating the former world number one for the first time in the second round of the Madrid Open. The Belgian posted a 7-5, 6-3 win over Robin Haase of the Netherlands.

Djokovic was ready to pounce though early in the second and opened up a 2-0 lead. Djokovic, who has been suffering from elbow injury since a long time, has not reached the last eight of any tournament since last year's Wimbledon. When things are not going so well, then everything seems more hard.

"But I have to keep working on them and pray that - and hope that my game will get stronger, get better as definitely as the matches, you know, go the distance".

And it follows his poor performances at the Indian Wells Masters, Miami Open and Barcelona Open. The 12th-ranked Serb also failed to advance past the last 16 at the Australian Open.

"One or two points decide really these kind of matches".

Djokovic believes the margins were slim and concludes that "luck was on his side a little bit".

The second set was even tighter.

The pair exchanged breaks early in the opening set, with Edmund the first to draw blood.

I play with the right intensity, the right focus all the time.

Bridget Welsh, an analyst from John Cabot University, slammed his speech as "unstatesmanlike". "Mahathir was a game changer". Almost 14.5 million Malaysians were eligible to vote at the country's 8,253 polling stations, as per Malaysia media reports.

"I just felt good today, felt I was hitting the ball well", Edmund said. "I try to always remind myself and be grateful of that".

Edmund moves on to face eighth-seeded David Goffin in the third round.

Nadal improved to 17-1 overall on the season with his win over the 41st-ranked Monfils. "I don't have any doubt that he's going to be back up at the highest level", Nadal said of Djokovic. "It was a very solid match in all aspects".

Goffin lost his serve again to trail 4-2 and, after missing a match point on Goffin's serve, Edmund served out for only his second career win against a top-10 opponent. The teenager got the better of his fellow Canadian Milos Raonic in a 6-4, 6-4 win.

"I have an aggressive game style and knew I had to impose that", Edmund told ATP Radio. "Despite a slow start, I was still very positive".

Novak Djokovic beats Kei Nishikori in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4.

Halep will now play Pliskova's twin sister Karolina for a place in the last four.
