Housing unit growth last year remained below 2007 levels in almost all states except North Dakota (up 1.0 percent last year, compared to a 0.9 percent increase in 2007); the District of Columbia (up 1.1 percent, compared to a 0.9 percent increase in 2007); South Dakota (up 1.4 percent, compared to a 1.2 percent increase in 2007); Iowa (up 0.9 percent, compared to a 0.7 percent increase in 2007); and Nebraska (returned to the 2007 growth rate of 0.8 percent).
"San Antonio tops the list with the largest population gain with an increase of over 24,200 people - an average of 66 people per day between 2016 and 2017", said Amel Toukabri, a demographer in the Census Bureau's population division.
Jacksonville is unique among Florida cities because the city makes up most of Duval County.
At the city level for the 12 months studied, Los Angeles added 18,643 people - the nation's No. 5 gain in population count and just 241 people shy of 4 million. The city's population was estimated at 63,574 residents with a growth rate of 3.7 percent in 2014 and 65,945 residents with a growth rate of 3.6 percent in 2015. Fort Worth's growth means the city is now the country's 15th biggest, the Census says. The growth rate of 0.8 percent from 2016 to 2017 was slower than the 1.4 percent a decade ago between 2006 and 2007.
The estimate ranks Bend as 12th among the fastest growing cities across the country previous year, with populations of 50,000 or more. Phoenix, for instance, saw a population increase of 1 percent, or 24,036.

The other villages with the largest one-year gains were Farmingdale, with a population increase of 207, or 2.3 percent, and Rockville Centre, which gained 112 people, for a 0.45 percent increase, according to the estimates.
