"When using Autopilot, drivers are continuously reminded of their responsibility to keep their hands on the wheel and maintain control of the vehicle at all times", a Tesla spokeswoman said in response to an AFP inquiry.
Uber put a temporary halt to its self-driving auto program in the United States after a March accident in Arizona that resulted in the death of woman pushing a bicycle in a street. Tesla's autopilot system uses sensors, cameras, and radar to study the vehicle's surroundings and carry out automatic functions which include emergency braking. Additionally, the Tesla's driver had minor injuries, but nothing that required immediate assistance.
The California crash is the latest example of semi-autonomous vehicles struggling to detect stationary objects.
Earlier this year, the National Transportation Safety Board started investigating an accident involving a Tesla Model S that rear-ended a firetruck on a freeway near Los Angeles.
On May 11, a Model S crashed into a fire department vehicle in Utah. According to the vehicle's data, it sped up just before hitting the truck and the driver hit the brakes seconds before impact.
Tesla's Autopilot feature is an advanced driver-assistant feature on the Model S and Model X that features the ability to change lanes, lane centering, adaptive cruise control, and more. The victim, a father of two and an engineer at Apple, was driving in Autopilot at the time, authorities said.

Tesla has warned that its Autopilot system doesn't prevent all accidents.
The news comes after two USA rights groups urged the Federal Trade Commission to investigate Tesla over its marketing of the assisted driving software.
Tesla chief Elon Musk complained in a recent earnings call that accidents involving self-driving cars get sensational headlines while the potential for the technology to save lives is downplayed or ignored.
Launched in late 2015, Tesla's Autopilot feature is meant to "relieve drivers of the most tedious and potentially risky aspects of road travel" and includes standard safety features like automatic emergency braking and collision warnings, but it is not meant to replace navigation by a human driver.
Tesla, in its defence, repeated its previous statements about Autopilot being an assistant rather than a replacement for the human.
