The motorist, 61-year-old Steven F. Hoppenbrouwer, has been charged with driving under the influence.

The bus was operated by Jet Executive Limousine of metro Atlanta, Wright said. Some passengers suffered broken bones and head injuries, Sgt. Chris Wright said, but none were life-threatening. The hospital said six passengers were either in good condition or had been treated and released.

Some later reports claimed that there were only 18 passengers on the bus during the crash, although the number at this time is unclear; it is possible different reports included the driver himself and other did not, but this in unconfirmed. Westbound traffic has since cleared but eastbound traffic is still heavy with single lane traffic being diverted to the shoulder. This is near the Appling-Harlem and Grovetown exits and just outside of Augusta.
