An audio clip featuring the purported conversation between the lecturer and some students went viral on Sunday.

Even as professor Nirmala Devi was arrested from her residence at Aruppukottai after a five-hour drama of her locking the door from the inside, academicians and politicians wonder if she is merely the tip of the iceberg as there are questions on "who is behind her" and "if she is just a tool".

A teacher of a college affiliated to Madurai Kamaraj University was arrested Monday for allegedly asking students to perform sexual favours for a senior university official.

His comments came amidst increasing demands from political parties in Tamil Nadu and students for a CBI probe into the matter which has enraged many in the state. Speaking to Tamil TV channels, the woman said that while it was her voice in the audio clip, the conversation was being misconstrued. "This comes in the backdrop of the university constituting an inquiry committee at the level of syndicate sub-committee last month based on the complaints against the college management over misappropriation of UGC funds". In the audio clipping, Nirmala Devi could be heard advising her pupils, over phone, about the opportunity awaiting them. Ramasamy, principal in-charge of the college, said they have launched an inquiry.

"Dating takes social courage and we need to teach our young people the virtue of social courage", Cronin said in a statement. The final-year students had accused Ms. Devi of promising them good marks in their semester examination, academic progress and also money in return for undertaking some "urgent assignment" assigned to her by "the higher officials of the MKU". During the conversation, Devi says she has access to the Governor and adds that "he is not a grandfather anyway". Addressing the pupil on the other end as "kanna", she says that till now, under teacher-students relationship, she has supported them academically. "Citing that part, she has said she wouldn't have made the suggestion if she wanted students to perform sexual favours", he said. DMK working president and CPI (M) state secretary K Balakrishnan sought a Madras High Court-monitored probe.

Citing the media reports of the immoral happenings in the college at Aruppukottai, Governor Purohit on Monday ordered a high powered enquiry by retired bureaucrat R Santhanam IAS into the issue after the report submitted by the university.
