Maya moved to NY in 1959, to concentrate on her writing career, and joined the Harlem Writers Guild.
Even though she was awarded a scholarship to study #Music And Dance, Maya dropped out of high school and began to work as the first female cab conductor. The traumatic incident left her mute for five years, during which time she took solace in books and poetry, launching her into a lifetime of literature.
Angelou died at the age of 86 in May 2014.

The author wrote a total of seven autobiographical books, starting with 1969's I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, detailing her younger life while dealing with subjects such as rape and racism, which brought her worldwide acclaim. From 2009 to 2012, she was an award-winning syndicated columnist for a number of daily newspapers from NY to Texas.
One of her most famous poem, On the Pulse of the Morning, was made for an recited at President Bill Clinton's inaugural ceremony in January 1993. She championed women's rights and gender equality.
In addition to becoming the first poet in three decades to make a recitation at a United States presidential inauguration, she was also the recipient of many awards, public accolades and over 50 honorary degrees.
