National Guard deployed to Texas-Mexico border within 72 hours

National Guard troops headed for border Friday night

Governors could be powerless to deny Trump troop request

Brown, who is fighting the Feds over a number of sanctuary cities in her state, including Portland, says she is "deeply troubled" by what she claims is Trump's attempt to militarize the border.

Trump signed a memo Wednesday providing for the deployment of National Guard members to the US border with Mexico, but details have yet to be finalized, CNN reports, although today he estimated the number of troops needed at 2,000 to 4,000.

The announcement in Austin came the same day Republican governor of Arizona Doug Ducey said about 150 members of the National Guard in his state would deploy next week to the border. A Democrat, Brown is the nation's first and only out bisexual governor.

Brown said on Twitter that the president has not reached out to her with a deployment request, but added she has "no intention of allowing Oregon's guard troops to be used to distract from his troubles in Washington" even if he does.

"These National Guard members will act in support of Border Patrol agents who are performing law enforcement duties", Chief Pentagon spokesperson Dana White said in a statement.

Trump signed a proclamation Wednesday night to allow the deployment, but the decisions have to be made in conjunction with the governors of the four border states, Nielsen said. Currently, there are federally deployed troops in the Middle East, said Christopher Ingersoll, a spokesman for the Oregon National Guard. Jerry Brown (D) on Thursday in hopes of getting his support.

In the end, Trump's call for troops is entirely dependent on the state Governors, unless he chose to federalize the National Guard in a particular state and issue orders of his own.

Asked by reporters aboard Air Force One Thursday how many National Guard members he wants on the border, the president responded, "Anywhere from 2,000 to 4,000".

"We'd like to stop it before the numbers get even bigger", she said. "We should have those laws", the President had said. "Going forward, Texas will continue to implement robust border security efforts, and this partnership will help ensure we are doing everything we can to stem the flow of illegal immigration".

"Some of the migrants planned to seek asylum in the they were fleeing extreme violence in their home countries - and they would have been stopped or apprehended at the border accordingly, immigration experts said".

Some media outlets would lead you to believe President Trump has "ordered" the National Guard to the Mexican border, to guard against already existing (and planned) "marches" of immigrants coming over. Around 30,000 Guard members eventually participated, according to a 2008 National Guard analysis, including more than 1,000 each from Kentucky, North Carolina and SC. Federal law prohibits the military from being used to enforce laws, meaning troops can not actually participate in immigration enforcement.

"If [President Trump] asks me to deploy Oregon Guard troops to the Mexico border, I'll say no", she tweeted Wednesday.
