The attack happened before school yesterday morning and three students were injured.

One of the injured kids is a 7th grader who was waiting to catch a transfer bus, the other two are students at Pleasantview.

Police said the 8-year-old student brought a kitchen knife to school and randomly slashed fellow students, The Associated Press reported. Chief Beise says after stabbing his fellow students the suspect went to the school office and laid the knife down.

All the victims suffered minor injuries.

Beise said the boy was released to his parents.

After bringing the situation under control, school authorities called police and an ambulance service, the AP said. Watkins said classes were not interrupted, as the incident happened before school, and classes continued as usual for the rest of the day.

"I don't think he had an intended target when he came to school with a knife", Sauk Rapids Police Chief Chief Perry Beise tells WCCO.

The police have also initiated investigation in the area and at adjacent locations to trace whereabouts of the missing school student. Once the police arrived, the assailant was in the school counselor's office while the victims received medical care in the nurse's office.

The event occurred in a school hallway and lasted approximately five minutes, the AP reported. A Pleasantview primary-aged student entered the building and upon putting away his backpack, he pulled out a knife and began striking students with it.

The chief says he doesn't know if the boy had been bullied or had mental health issues.
