James tied the record Wednesday on MJ's own court, against the Jordan-owned Charlotte Hornets.
The home crowd gave James a raucous standing ovation as he saluted the fans and handed the game ball to a staff member to take to the locker room.
Jordan's streak spanned from March 25, 1986, during his second season in the league, to December 26, 2001, which was 26 games into his first season with the Washington Wizards after spending the previous three years in retirement.
Now in his 11th season with the Cavaliers and 15th overall in the NBA, James is averaging 27.4 points, 8.6 rebounds, 9.1 assists, 0.9 blocks and 1.5 steals over 37.1 minutes per game in 75 starts for the Central Division-leading Cavaliers (45-30).
James's effort propelled the Cavs to a bounce-back win after a disappointing defeat to the Heat in Miami on Tuesday - when they produced a season-low 79 points.

Menphis Smith surpassed his time in the 100 meter dash from the week before, finishing with 14.83 seconds. The Rockets' 4X800 team of Breeze, Street, Hughes and Justin Neathery posted a winning time of 10.66.
James matched Jordan's 17-year-old mark in the second quarter when he scored his 10th point on a powerful alley-oop dunk off a pass from J.R. Smith. "The body of work, how I'm doing it, what's been happening with our team all year long, how we've got so many injuries & things of that nature, guys in & out, to be able to still keep this thing afloat, I definitely would vote me".
"Well, I tell you, LeBron has been healthy, and he continues to be healthy", Cavs acting coach Larry Drew said when asked about James' impending record before the game.
The last time James scored less than 10 points was against the Milwaukee Bucks on January 5, 2007.
"My love for the game... it's my motivation", James said.
James has scored 6,163 points in postseason play, and will get a chance to build upon that total when the NBA Playoffs get underway in two weeks.
