"You have this paradox of having the top and bottom counties next to each other in a part of the same metropolitan area". The Southern Nevada Health District presented findings for Clark County at a community event Wednesday along with representatives from the Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health and State Senator Pat Spearman.

"That kind of looks at quality of life and a lot of different factors: behavioral factors, physical environment, access to care", said Kylie Jones the Community Health Planner.

The differences stretched beyond place and were also defined by race, especially when looking at rising low birth weights.

Oakman says childhood poverty can impact lifelong health because it causes stress and can limit access to quality education, food, and physical activity.

According to the report, 28 percent of children in Milwaukee County are living in poverty, compared to the statewide average of 16 percent. Officials with the Columbia/Boone County Public Health and Human Services Department plans to consider the data in its current work towards the county's next five-year community health improvement plan. The Institute works across the full spectrum of factors that contribute to health.

"We can't be a healthy, thriving nation if we continue to leave entire communities and populations behind", said Dr. Richard Besser, RWJF president and CEO. "And not everyone has the same opportunity to be healthy", said Ali Havrilla, a community coach with County Health Rankings & Roadmaps, which released the data. "I applaud those who are working to create healthy, connected communities and improve health opportunities for all people in Virginia".

Progress is a good thing, but a two-rank change is not a significant one, said Kitty Jerome, researcher for the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute.

The rankings say Wake County is the healthiest in North Carolina, followed by Orange, Camden, Union and Mecklenburg counties.
