Raiders to release high-price CB Smith

Dec 17 2017 Oakland CA USA Oakland Raiders cornerback Sean Smith runs an interception against the Dallas Cowboys during the third quarter at Oakland Coliseum

Sean Smith will be released by Oakland Raiders

In July, he was accused of stomping on a man's head and charged with felony assault for his alleged involvement. Also Monday morning, The Los Angeles Times reported that Smith, 30, is expected to serve jail time for his role in an altercation that occurred previous year in Pasadena. Both cornerbacks signed lucrative contracts in 2016. While under contract with Oakland in the 2016 and 2017 seasons, he hadn't appeared in a regular-season game since 2015. Teams were allowed to start negotiating with prospective free agents beginning Monday morning. But he never played up to that level and the Raiders have chose to cut him instead of paying him $8.5 million this year. Smith endured a handful of benchings over the past two seasons and finished previous year as the 76th player at his position, per Pro Football Focus.

Oakland will again seek to bolster the secondary in free agency, looking for a starter at cornerback to pair with last year's first-round pick Gareon Conley.
