Georgia reaches out to Tom Crean regarding coaching vacancy

Tom Crean, who for almost two decades has regularly led his basketball teams to national rankings and postseason bids, has been named head coach of the Georgia Bulldogs.

Crean previously served as head coach at IN and Marquette.

"I am honored an humbled to join the University of Georgia family", Crean said in the statement. The word of his firing dropped right before the start of the 2017 NCAA Tournament.

The Bulldogs initially attempted to hire Thad Matta away from Ohio State, but he promptly turned down the offer which led the head coaching search in the direction of Crean. He stayed there nine seasons and enjoyed a run to the Final Four with Dwyane Wade.

Tom Crean looks to be headed back to the college coaching ranks. His teams have consistently been participants in postseason play, and his players have been extremely successful in the classroom.

Georgia was in the market for a new coach after the Bulldogs elected to part with Mark Fox after missing the NCAA Tournament for the seventh time in nine seasons in Athens. Georgia has always been considered a job with a high ceiling because of the amount of talent in the greater Atlanta area. That stretch was highlighted by a No. 1 seed in the 2013 NCAA Tournament and a Big Ten Coach of the Year for Crean in 2016.

For his head coaching career, Crean is 356-231. Crean went 166-135 at IN - including 138-69 over his final six seasons. That leaves its most recent tournament win in 1997.

Georgia has scheduled a Friday news conference to introduce Crean.
