Virginia looks like top seed in NCAA committee's eyes

College basketball rankings: Virginia holds on to the top spot in the Top 25 (and 1)

Virginia was projected as the No. 1 overall seed (in the South region) and joined on the 1-line by Villanova (East), Xavier (Midwest) and Purdue (West).

The NCAA Tournament selection committee has been using Team Sheets to create the 68-team field for years.

Auburn, Kansas, Duke and Cincinnati were the No. 2 seeds.

The other three No. 3 seeds along with Michigan State are Clemson, Texas Tech and North Carolina. Away from Mackey Arena, the Boilermakers are 6-1 in the Big Ten, 7-1 including the nonconference and 2-2 on neutral sites.

"The committee was pretty strong in their consensus of the No. 1 seeds", said NCAA Tournament chair and Creighton athletic director Bruce Rasmussen.

There is still one month remaining in the season and some time for these seeds to switch up before Selection Sunday.

Villanova was selected as the second No. 1 seed (East Region). The 3-seed in Auburn's region was Clemson and the 4-seed was Oklahoma.

Virginia dropped a 61-60 game to Virginia Tech in overtime Saturday to slip to 23-2 this season. Had we won, yeah we would have been No. 1.

Midwest: 1. Xavier, 2. Tennessee is ranked as the No. 4 seed for that region. When the bracket came out a year ago, 15 of the teams were among the 16 we revealed in February.

"Really proud of the way our guys have played this year, gotten off to a great start, certainly have a little work left to finish".

Virginia leads the ACC race by two games in the loss column over Clemson (9-3) and resumes league competition Tuesday at Miami.
