Canada's Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir begin their quest for Olympic ice dance gold with Monday's short program

They had wanted to skate to it ever since.

Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, who trained at the club as children and lived in Waterloo for a period of time, won a gold medal in the ice dance competition at the Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. "Hopefully ice dancers come to a new level".

France took victory in the mixed relay biathlon, with Martin Fourcade starring en route to his fifth Olympic gold medal. The Canadians also have two silvers.

Kaitlyn Weaver of Toronto and Andrew Poje of Waterloo, Ont., were seventh, one spot ahead of Piper Gilles of Toronto and Paul Poirier of Unionville, Ont.

The Canadian pair, who were also the team's flag bearers at the Opening Ceremony, won another gold medal in the ice dance at the 2010 Games in Vancouver, Canada, and took home two silver medals in Sochi in 2014, in the ice dance and team event. It gave them a two-dance total of 205.28, another world record.

"It wasn't the best part of the day (watching Virtue and Moir) but it's like that, they skated really well", said Cizeron.

Papadakis and Cizeron have an elegant, lyrical style while Moir and Virtue are known for their sensuality and energy on the ice.

Moir was asked about their contribution to the sport, and was modest in response.

Heinz Haemmerle, or "Magic Heinzi" as USA skier Lindsey Vonn calls her Austrian-born ski technician, is reflected in the ski goggles of the world's most successful skiing woman before the start of Vonn's third Olympic Downhill training run at the Winter Olympics 2018 in Pyeongchang, South Korea, February 20, 2018. Obviously, 2010 we were in our own country.

"We put the pressure on ourselves", Virtue said.

Their efforts counted for even more after the Canadian and Chinese teams were penalised in the subsequent race, elevating them to the podium.

No one can take that away from them. (There's adorable YouTube video of the two youngsters in early competitions).

"They were born under good stars, " Dubreuil said with a smile, "because they found each other at a young age, and it's a partnership that kept growing". "And he would say that's 19 or 20 years of regret".

It was so close, they ended up sharing the gold.

Moir said these Olympics were "personal".

"I wish I could have that moment back", they told reporters afterward.

The duo skated to a couple tracks from the musical Moulin Rouge, with the crowd enjoying their final routine, virtually on their feet at its completion. "I don't know if he liked me, but we just went along with it". But for the slightly lower score in that skate, it could have been them going home Tuesday in first place. They'd agreed the night before to plug their ears during the other skates and focus on their own performance.

But four-times world champion Friedrich and Margis set the fastest time before the Canadians matched their mark of 3 minutes 16.86 seconds. However, things were once "romantic" between them, when they were 9 and 7-years-old. Nedregotten says "they've robbed us of our moment of glory".

Their score of 123.35 points was exactly what they needed to make a case for gold and it was the flawless response to the previous day, when the clasp behind Papadakis' neck on the halter-top portion of her costume came undone and her breast was exposed live on global television.

"At the end (though), of course", she added.

They're the best of all time.

"I couldn't help but think about the 20 years we've spent working for this moment and the incredible team of people behind us".
