Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday laid the foundation stone for the Rs 16,700 crore-Navi Mumbai global airport, which is expected to ease flight operations at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji worldwide Airport.

The aviation sector in India is poised for a huge growth in the coming years, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said here yesterday. "We are moving in a direction where the state is policy driven, governance is performance driven, government is accountable and democracy is participative", he said.

Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani said Mumbai is both his "janmabhoomi" (birthplace) and his own "karmabhoomi" (are of action) where the start-up company was established by his father, the late visionary Dhirubhai Ambani with a seed capital of Rs 1,000 and one employee.

In October 2017, the Maharashtra government's Project Monitoring and Implementation Committee had approved conglomerate GVK's bid to construct the airport in Navi Mumbai.

Talking about Navi Mumbai airport, he said, this is the biggest Greenfield airport being developed since independence. While the first phase will add a capacity of 24 lakh containers per year, the capacity will increase to 100 lakh containers per year once the second phase is completed by 2022. Aviation sector also brings more employment opportunities.

"The Sagar Mala project is ushering not only development of ports but also port-led development", he said, adding that his government is making significant efforts towards the development of waterways.

Presently, there are a total of around 450 aircraft operating in the country, but that will be more than tripled with over 900 new aircraft to be deployed over the next few years in the country, Modi said.

On the other hand, conceived almost two decades ago, the 160 billion rupee Navi Mumbai International Airport is being developed on a public-private partnership basis by City and Industrial Development Corporation - CIDCO and GVK group which runs the existing Mumbai airport.

The land needed for the airport is yet to be fully acquired, PTI reported. The first phase of Navi Mumbai Airport is expected to cost around Rs 6,000 crore.
