Washington D.C. [USA], Feb 21 (ANI): Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Tuesday called for a Middle East peace conference to be held by mid-2018 and ruled out the United States as a broker of peace with Israel.
For several years now, the Arab states have suggested that the plan can serve as a basis for negotiations, and that progress toward Israeli-Palestinian peace can be met with parallel progress toward peace between Israel and other Arab states.
Israeli authorities and armed forces carried out extrajudicial executions, tortured Palestinian prisoners and targeted human rights defenders, Amnesty International's new annual report says.
"These are the worst prospects for peace between Israel and the Palestinians for years", he said, adding that he didn't think that Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel's Prime Minister, "has any intention" of making progress towards the goal, the thrust of worldwide efforts for decades, of the creation of a separate state for the Palestinians alongside Israel.
Fatah and Hamas have engaged in a faltering reconciliation process since the latter wrested the Gaza Strip from pro-Fatah forces in 2007. Israel captured the territory in the 1967 Middle East war.
Abbas will likely advocate for the establishment of a Palestinian state and a two-state solution. "Once again he is running away", Danon said.
Netanyahu's office issued a statement saying: "Abbas didn't say anything new".
Danon accused Abbas of using "hateful speech" and glorifying violence instead of improving the lives of Palestinians. "You are the problem".
Haley minced no words in responding to the Palestinian leader. "In the future, we will intensify our efforts to achieve membership in the United Nations", he said.
However, Abbas did not see Haley's wrath as he left the chamber after he addressed the Security Council.
The PA has been under pressure in the aftermath of the USA decision to relocate its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, after facing criticism from Palestinians and rival factions such as Hamas for engaging in negotiations with Israel during the past 25 years.
"The Palestinian leadership has a choice to make between two different paths". But he said council members "haven't received any details" of the USA proposal for Palestinian-Israeli peace.
Following the declaration, the Palestinian Authority said that the USA is no longer fit to mediate in the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, while the U.S. threatened to cut off UNRWA funding for Palestinian refugees, and to any country that votes against the Jerusalem resolution at the United Nations.
