White Christmas possible in northern RI

NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information has an official definition for White Christmas: One inch or more of snow at 7 a.m. on Christmas Day.

The city hasn't seen snow on the ground on Christmas since 2009.

Days of cold are expected to follow Christmas, with temperatures expected to be in the 20s on Tuesday and Wednesday and the high teens on Thursday and Friday. Slow down and use caution while driving.

The hotels were nearly houseful, as numerous tourist-driven by snow charm and had already got their advance bookings done.

Tuesday, expect a high of 18 with mostly cloudy skies, the weather service said, with a north northeast wind of 7 to 9 miles per hour.

The spokeswoman said: "It's quite likely that parts of Scotland, particularly the southern uplands and possibly the central hills above a couple of hundred metres or so will see some snow". A heavy blanket of snow has befallen much of the Buckeye State. If traveling, be prepared for rapidly changing road conditions and visibilities. Winter weather advisories have been issued for our area until 1 AM.

In Omaha, Saturday's snow means a high probability of a white Christmas, and it will be followed by a shift toward bitterly cold weather, said Van DeWald, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Valley.

A number of reported snowfall totals came in early on Christmas morning - Wallkill had 4.3 inches of 6:12 a.m.; Red Hook had 4 inches as of 7 a.m.; Kingston had 4 inches as of 7 a.m.; and Poughkeepsie had 2 inches as of 7 a.m.

So far this winter, snowfall in the Rochester area has been more or less on par with years past.
