Birmingham Bowl Texas Tech vs. South Florida Predictions 12/23/17

South Florida converted a fourth-down on the first play of the quarter and drove as far as the Red Raiders' goal line but could not convert a fourth-and-goal attempt at the 1-yard line to tie the game.

Red Raiders with the go ahead touchdown, Nic Shimonek connected with Keke Coutee for the 5 yard score. Plus Texas Tech had every opportunity to win this game, but could not finish the job when it mattered.

The second came on a perfectly time wheel route that got past the Red Raiders' defense.

After a failed Tech drive which featured Shimonek getting sacked for a third time, Panazzolo botched a punt that went only 15 yards, which gave Flowers and the Bulls offense good starting field position.

With 16 seconds left, Flowers threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to McCants to give USF a 38-34 lead, and after the Hail Mary pass was too short, the South Florida Bulls won the Birmingham Bowl.

Flowers became the American Athletic Conference's career leader in total offense with a 21-yard touchdown pass late in the first half. It's a low scoring affair in the first half with a 10-10 halftime score. As noted above, the two teams got off to slow starts offensively, with USF answering a Texas Tech field goal with one of its own in the first quarter.

Flowers finished with 311 yards passing and four touchdowns. It's Cantrell's 7th touchdown catch of the year.

At the beginning of the fourth quarter, Flowers broke for a 29-yard run to put South Florida deep in the red zone. It's 17-17 with 8:34 left in the third. Senior running back Justin Stockton rushed for 103 yards in 18 carries, and junior running back Tre King had one rushing touchdown.

Texas Tech continued to pile up the yards but the South Florida defense kept the Red Raiders out of the end zone and off the scoreboard in the second quarter. South Florida scored nine plays later on a 5-yard run by Flowers to tie the game at 24-24 with 9:30 left to play in the game.

South Florida made its way across midfield on a 43-yard catch from Marquez Valdes-Scantling but bogged down in the red zone and turned the ball over on downs following a fail fourth-down conversion. Bulls took their first lead of the ballgame, 31-27 with 4:26 left to play. The Red Raiders results included: a field goal, turnover on downs, punt, and two interceptions before the break as both squads went into the locker room knotted up at 10-10.

Flowers scrambled for 21 yards to setup the game winning touchdown.
