Powerful Winds Threaten To Make Southern California Fires Even Worse

Fire officials reported earlier that 30 homes had been destroyed.

The Creek fire, which burned homes in the hills above Sylmar, was now 80% contained. Nearly 1,700 firefighters and other personnel were deployed today against the blaze, which was 20 percent contained as of 8:30 p.m. Red-flag parking restrictions will be lifted at 8 a.m. Friday. Between 400 and 600 firefighters from 52 engine companies were engaging in the fire fight, supported by helicopters that were making water drops and two fixed-wing aircrafts, the mayor said.

"We are in the beginning of a protracted wind event", Ken Pimlott, director of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, told the Los Angeles Times. Sixteen schools in Local District West and several Valley and westside independent charter schools will also remain closed, for a total of 265 schools.

The Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District closed all of its schools Wednesday and Thursday.

Authorities reported Thursday that they had made some progress in containing the fires, which include the Skirball fire in west Los Angeles near the 405 Freeway, and the Creek fire near Sylmar, in the San Fernando Valley.

Terrazas warned that the battle was likely to continue until at least Friday.

The LAPD was placed on a citywide tactical alert, which allows commanders to keep officers beyond the end of their shifts, giving them maximum flexibility in deploying resources. City officials confirmed some streets were open to residents only in Bel Terrace, Roscomare Road, all roads between Sunset Boulevard and Bellagio Road and North Casiano Road from Mulholland Drive.

However, all westbound 210 Freeway exits from the 118 Freeway to the 5 Freeway are closed, and from Lowell Avenue to the 118 Freeway, sheriff's officials said. The Los Angeles County Department of Animal Control said the horses were locked in their stalls.
