Kansas gas prices tied the second largest weekly decline in the country, falling another four cents per gallon to a statewide average of $2.28.

Motorists throughout Virginia have seen prices at the pump drop steadily throughout the week, as much as three cents in some areas, outpacing the national trend, according to AAA Mid-Atlantic. However, on the week, gas prices in these states are down at least two cents, while Californias price increased by a penny. Drivers can expect pump prices to continue to drop heading into the holiday season as supply strengthens and fall gasoline demand weakens.

Overall, Virginians are seeing an average of prices 20 cents below the national average.

Last year, almost 1.5 million new vehicles sold in the U.

"There's no question that higher-octane premium fuel has the potential to boost a vehicle's fuel economy and performance, however, engines have to be calibrated to require that fuel to see the full benefit", John Nielsen, AAA's Managing Director of Automotive Engineering and fix, said in a statement. In a study released a year ago, AAA found consumers wasted almost $2.1 billion fueling vehicles that neither recommended or required premium gasoline.

Automakers sometimes advertise higher horsepower figures they attained using premium to attract enthusiasts, and buyers who don't know how little the difference will mean to them.

The organization tested six cars where manufacturers recommend - but don't require - premium gasoline (rated as 91 octane or higher) and found that premium fuel had a slight benefit in "extreme driving scenarios", like towing or cargo hauling.

The findings fly (drive) in the face of the common-held belief, especially held by owners of luxury vehicles, that if you put premium into your tank, it will perform at an optimal level.

Test vehicles included everything from a Mazda Miata two-seats sports auto with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine to a Cadillac Escalade with a big 5, o-liter V8 motor.
