GM Drivers Can Now Order a Starbucks From Their Car's Touchscreen

GM thinks we want to use our cars like credit cards, but I'm not so sure

GM says around 4 million drivers will be able to access the feature immediately, a figure that's expected to rise over the next year.

The app also lets drivers know about discounts on GM parts and accessories.

In explaining the reasoning behind the app, GM said people spend an average of 46 minutes driving per day and that "the daily commute is the only time not accessible in a consumers' day" for most retailers and brands. Gee!

Tuesday launched Marketplace, a new e-commerce feature that will allow its customers to order and pay for food, make dinner reservations, reserve a parking space, or pay for gas.

Iyer told Bloomberg the app is designed "in accordance with voluntary driver-distraction guidelines agreed to by vehicle companies", but didn't specify those guidelines. Payment for items such as food and drink is made through accounts owners have previously set up with popular merchants on the platform. "Leveraging connectivity and our unique data capabilities, we have an opportunity to make every trip more productive and give our customers time back". Marketplace will reportedly feature a "Shop" tab that will allow users to but WiFi data, and special discounts for GM customers like oil changes and auto accessories.

"We will be adding more vendors", Chamorro says, "and we will be continuously improving the experience".

By the end of 2018, GM expects 4 million of its Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC vehicles in the us will have Marketplace.

TGI Fridays will let customers schedule a table reservation for them and their closest friends and family when they need a break from the week.

General Motors said it is working with three main platform partners: Xevo in Seattle, Washington; Conversable in Austin, Texas; and Sionic Mobile in Atlanta.
