Mayor encourages shoppers to shop Small Business Saturday

Between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Small Business Saturday is a big day for mom and pop shops to get customers to shop local.

Small Business Saturday in November 25th and Downtown Holland businesses will be offering plenty.

Since its launch by American Express in 2010, the Saturday after Thanksgiving has been set aside to draw holiday shoppers' attention to the brick and mortar small businesses that remain the economic backbone of local communities.

According to the 2017 Small Business Saturday Consumer Insights Survey, 65 percent say the main reason will support these establishments is because they value the contributions small businesses make to the community.

But many small business owners say they do rely on that support all year.

Port City Daily has compiled a few of the many stores offering special deals for Small Business Saturday.

Several businesses downtown are being featured in a new series of Small Business Saturday videos produced by Video Mann Productions.

The Orange County Chamber of Commerce has helped promote Small Business Saturday since 2014.

She left the role this year , with speculation mounting that she was going for the position of CEO at Uber. "Other than that, Ms. Whitman, 61, took over in 2011 at the former Hewlett-Packard Co., a company founded in 1939 and for years a tech bellwether.

"I think small businesses are very, very important, especially keeping the small towns alive", she said.

One of my goals in leading the U.S. Small Business Administration is to revitalize a sense of entrepreneurship in America. There's probably more locally owned businesses than you realize.

"They have thought that, as long as they are going to be around this area, why not just go into business for themselves instead of working for somebody else", Venable said. When it comes to gift shopping, nothing says family and community better than the small local business.

"For every dollar spent with a local business, three times more stays here in the community as compared to a dollar spent with a national chain", Haley said.

Howard noted that it's these small businesses that contribute to the quality of life Loudoun residents enjoy, whether it be taxes that fund schools or public safety, or in the business' direct contributions to area nonprofits, community associations and sports teams. Shoppers are encouraged to take selfies of their shopping spree from 8 a.m.to midnight, using the hashtag #startselfie, for the chance to win an official Streator mug as well as a $25 gift card to a Streator business of their choosing from a list of available merchants.

Like their "big box" counterparts, the pop-up shops in Downtown Norfolk's brand new Selden Market remained steady on Black Friday, but its the next day that they've got in their sights.

The gift basket's contents vary, but the organizers have plans for gift certificates from chamber members and other goods.
