Storm Katia rapidly weakens after making landfall in Mexico

Incredibly, all three of the active hurricanes in the Atlantic basin could affect land at the same time on Saturday: Irma over the Bahamas (and approaching Florida), Jose over the northeastern Leewards, and Katia in Mexico.

Two days of satellite imagery from NASA's Terra and NOAA's GOES East satellites showed that Hurricane Katia was starting to crawl to the coast of southeastern Mexico.

In an unlikely coincidence, these storms are nearly in the same order and position as Irma, Jose and Katia, and have the same first three letters (I, J, K).

In the Dominican Republic, people look at what remains of their home as Hurricane Irma moves away.

The National Hurricane Center also said a tropical storm watch was in effect for the island nation of St. Kitts and Nevis, the British territories of Anguilla and Montserrat, and the islands of Saba and St. Eustatius, which are part of the Netherlands. Near the coast, the surge will be accompanied by large and destructive waves.

The remnants of Katia are expected to produce additional rainfall accumulations of 3 to 6 inches over central and northern Veracruz, eastern Hidalgo, and northern Puebla through this afternoon.

NHC scientist Eric Blake said: 'It is unparalleled here and totally ridiculous given the scale of Irma. Isolated maximum amounts of 8 inches are possible. Before Irma, the Okeechobee Hurricane (in 1928) and Hurricane David (1979) were the strongest to hit the area with winds of 160 miles per hour.

The centre said Irma made landfall there and has maximum sustained winds of 257 km/h. Hurricane Harvey hit southeastern Texas as a Category 4 storm on the wind scale, with top winds above 130 miles per hour, and finished with an ACE of 11.1.

As Katia reached the Mexican Gulf Coast, Hurricane Irma, one of the most powerful Atlantic storms in a century, walloped Cuba's northern coast.

In the Gulf of Mexico, Hurricane Katia made landfall late on Friday north of Tecolutla, Mexico and weakened to a tropical storm, with winds reaching 45 miles per hour.
